Martial Arts
Martial Arts at the Y:
Aikido
Aikido is a non-competitive art based on the philosophy and martial arts of the Japanese Samurai. Though it is an effective self-defense, it is not a “fighting” martial art. Two people train together to learn techniques without notions of winning or losing. Classes are taught by Mark Reitmeier, 3rd Dan, who is a certified instructor of the Aikido Yoshokai Association of North America. Mark began training in 1997 and is a graduate of Kenshu, a 20-month long instructor training program. He continues to train regularly at the Aikido Yoshokai Association headquarters in Ann Arbor.

Tae Kwon Do
Tae Kwon Do is action philosophy. It is the Korean art of self-defense. Literally, translated, Tae means kick or to strike with the foot, Kwon means fist or to strike with the hand, Do means discipline or art. It is much more than the image of the martial arts physical aspect. It is designed as a non-violent art and system of complete body exercises as well as being a way of life. It includes physical techniques, mental discipline, and a deep philosophy. Classes are taught by Junior Grandmaster James A. Rogers, 7th Dan. James has been taught by Grand Master Tae Park for the last 36 years. The Jackson YMCA is the Central Studio for the Tae Park Institute.
